This qualitative inquiry examines the multifaceted role that the concept of place holds in the professional identities and administrative practices of rural school leaders in Appalachian Virginia. These educational settings often are marked by distinct challenges, such as geographic isolation, resource limitations, and a perceived disconnect from macro-level policy decisions. Through a basic qualitative inquiry involving 12 school leaders across six southwestern Virginia divisions, the study explores how rural leaders perceive and address such complexities through a place-based lens. I utilize a researcher-developed tripartite theoretical framework of active aspects of place as practiced space, which includes mētis, or local or place-oriented practical intelligence; terroir, the socio-cultural connection derived from place; and bricolage, the creative repurposing of place-bound assets when formal resources are scarce. The findings indicate that place-consciousness is fundamental to rurally responsive leadership, as participants leverage community history, local culture, and rural capital to implement educative initiatives. These efforts enhance students’ sense of belonging and make academic learning more relevant. Despite obstacles related to state standards and funding, leaders employ deeply relational community partnerships and improvisational praxis to make decisions and engage community-based assets. Ultimately, the study suggests that a place-conscious approach is essential for sustaining successful leadership and educational practices in rural communities.
