Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs and DOIs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The manuscript is free from any identifying information - in the header/footer, citations, references, in author identification embedded by the software, and in the body of the manuscript. 
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines. TPRE uses the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of APA.

General Guidelines 

Author guidelines for TPRE

The journal is currently accepting manuscripts written in English or Spanish. All manuscripts should follow APA style guidelines (7th edition), be saved as a .doc or .docx file, formatted to fit 8½ by 11-inch paper, and double spaced. Manuscripts should be between 5000 and 7500 words, not including figures, captions, or references. Book reviews should be between 750 and 1500 words, excluding references.

In addition, the journal is accepting submission of digital projects. Please see details below regarding content and format for digital project submissions.

All manuscript submissions must include:

  1.  The submission prompts will guide you through the process: type of manuscript submitted (research-based, practice-based, review, etc.), notes for the editor; abstract (250-500 words), key words, confirmation that the manuscript is not under consideration for publication in any other publication venues and that it has not been previously published. (See For the author for details on the types of manuscripts.)
  2. Manuscript - please make sure the manuscript is free from any identifying information - in the header/footer, citations, references, author hidden in Word, and in the body of the manuscript. 
  3. References page.
  4. Tables and figures, if applicable, should be within the manuscript. 
  5. Acknowledgements (optional).
  6. A statement indicating whether the manuscript is part of a funded project, including information about the funding agency and the project.

Book reviews must include:

  1. The online submission process prompts for the type of manuscript, notes to the editor to outline the relevance of the book being reviewed and the fit with the scope of the journal and other key information. Authors are also asked to confirm that the review is not under consideration for publication in any other publication venues and that it has not been previously published.
  2. A cover page including: bibliographical information of the book reviewed, as well as name, institutional affiliation, and contact information of the corresponding author. There is also a prompt for a  brief bio of the author (you).
  3. Review.
  4. References in APA 7th.

 Digital project submissions must include:

  1. The submission prompts will guide you through the process (type of manuscript submitted [digital project], notes for the editor; abstract (250-500 words), key words, and  confirmation that the manuscript is not under consideration for publication in any other publication venues and that it has not been previously published). Authors are also asked to confirm that the project is not under consideration for publication in any other publication venues and that it has not been previously published.
  2. A cover page including: project title and permalink, authors' names and institutional affiliations, and contact information of corresponding author.
  3. A manuscript (800-1200 words), including the following elements:
  • An introduction and rationale for the creation of the project.
  • Details about the project, its conception, and its creation process.
  • A statement of the impact of the project for the rural education field.
  • A description of the technology and other resources used.
  • A statement indicating whether this is a funded project, including information about the funding agency.
  • A permalink to the project.

Introduction

Introduction: An overview of the current issue written by an editor or invited author.

Research Forum

Research Forum. This section includes quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research.  Manuscripts use APA format that includes clear details in the method sections. Literature reviews are current and address research questions. Discussion draws conclusions from extant literature and research findings and states implications for future research or practice.

Practice Forum

Practice Forum section includes descriptions of action research and professional practice in K-12 grades and preservice teaching programs. Descriptions of practice, which have been implemented in school settings, are supported by current evidence-based research. Recommendations for practice are made based on extant literature and lessons learned from implementations. Manuscripts use APA format for citations and references.

Digital Project

Digital projects submissions must include a cover letter outlining the impact of the information being presented in the project and the fit with the scope of the journal. The manuscript (800-1200 words) should include:

  • An introduction and rationale for the creation of the project.
  • Details about the project, its conception, and its creation process.

Book/Media Reviews

Book/Media Reviews: Authors may submit a proposal that includes the title, author, relevance to TPRE readership, and a brief 100-word overview of the book/media. Upon acceptance of the proposal, the manuscript should be 1000-1500 words and provide an overview of the book and its relevance or timeliness to current issues in education; a background of the author's credentials; a comprehensive explanation of the specific topics covered; the prospective audience; and a summary/review/opinion.
